“Woofstock” dog festival in Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Tuesday, June 12, 2007

North America’s largest outdoor dog festival came back to Toronto last weekend for its fifth year. It ran from the 9th of June to the 10th of June at Toronto’s historical St. Lawrence Market. A Wikinews reporter was there on Sunday to report on some of the events that happened on the last day.

The “Woofstock” dog festival attracted as many as 140,000 people with their dogs. The festival had tons of accessories, sold under tents, to buy for dogs; food, toys, designer clothes, and more. About 400 vendors and exhibitors were there to promote their products, which also gave private dog companies or groups a chance to show their new products. The local SPCA and some animal rescues were under tents answering questions from visitors. While walking, all visitors could see the CN Tower and other very tall buildings.

One of the local TV stations, Citytv, was there. They hosted a live event at the show which was broadcast on TV. People came up on the stage and asked questions regarding their dogs and the host and co-host answered them.

A man, who called himself the “Chalk Master”, drew two pictures on pavement with chalk. He did it for free but donations were welcome. One was a picture of a girl’s head beside a dog’s head, and another with a wolf.

“Hello Humans. I’ve been invited here to provide your eyeball(s), with some pretty colours. I don’t get paid as I work this weekend strictly for tips… so, if you like what you see please make a DONATION. If you don’t like it simply reach into the pocket of the person next to you and give me their money. CHALK MASTER.”

A contest called “Canada’s top dog” had its own tent with a professional photographer taking pictures of dogs behind a white screen; the winning photo is to be published on the cover of “Puppy and dog basics” magazine.

Large “Gourmet” dog bones were also served from a cart and table.

Next year’s festival is expected to be bigger and better with even more attractions.

Michelin’s tyre mistake sends US Formula One Grand Prix into farce

Sunday, June 19, 2005

The Indianapolis Formula One Grand Prix descended into farce when just six cars started the race on Sunday. The problem arose when Michelin discovered that its tires were incapable of more than ten laps at race pace.

The first indication of trouble was when the rear left tire of Ralf Schumacher’s Toyota racecar exploded during practice on Friday. Schumacher’s car collided with the track wall while travelling at 300 km/h (approx. 186 miles/h), leaving him shaken but generally unharmed. However, further investigations by Michelin revealed that another ten tires had suffered problems, with one also failing on track.

All the problems occurred on the rear left tire during the two long 90 degree corners leading onto the main straight. The nine degree banking and grooves cut into the surface of the track compounded problems.

It is believed that Michelin may not have properly accounted for the grooves cut into the Indianapolis track to improve grip for Indy cars after the track was resurfaced. Indy cars have smaller down-force generating wings so need more grip from their tires than Formula One cars.

Bridgestone, the other tire manufacturer currently in Formula One, did not have similar problems. It is possible that their US subsidiary, Firestone, who supplied tires for an Indy car race after the resurfacing, may have sent information back to their Formula One tires department in Japan. The three teams running Bridgestone tires – Ferrari, Jordan and Minardi – were therefore able to compete without any safety concerns.

Under FIA racing regulations, the only course of action was for the Michelin runners to withdraw from the race on safety grounds. Rules prevented alternative tires from being flown from France overnight, although Michelin were unsure whether these tires were also affected by the problem.

Drivers and teams had also suggested building a chicane to slow cars down between the corners, but Ferrari opposed the idea, and ultimately the FIA rejected the idea under regulations.

Actually the FIA rules states that the tyres manufacters should provide two sets of tyres for the race. One normal, optimized for performance, and one optimized for safety, to be used when the normal one set could not be used. In this case the safe set was not present.

The 123,000 fans watching from the stands were unaware of the farce unfolding below them until the parade lap before the race.

The fourteen Michelin runners peeled off into the pit lane rather than take up their starting positions on the grid. However, at least one driver, David Coulthard told his team that he was willing to race on the tires in question, had the decision been left up to him.

Fans jeered and booed as they realised what was happening, and a small number began throwing bottles and cans onto the track.

Rubens Barrichello, in a Ferrari, ran over one bottle of water at high speed which exploded in a spray of droplets.

Fans started stamping in the stands on the finish line straight, causing them to shake.

A British ITV filmcrew spoke to some fans. “I paid $85 for three-day ticket. I travelled nine hours from Baltimore to be here. Indy cars wouldn’t do this. NASCAR wouldn’t do this. I’ll never attend a race again – only watch on TV.”

Other fans had travelled from Mexico and Panama to watch the race, and said they wanted refunds.

A Police Captain also talked to ITV, saying he’d never seen fans as angry as this before. If trouble flared, they could call on 400-500 officers from local and state police, Indianapolis Police Department and the FBI under contingency plans.

The race was eventually won by Michael Schumacher from his Ferrari teammate Rubens Barrichello. Jordan’s Tiago Monteiro finished third. Despite what was clearly a one-manufacturer race for the win, both Ferrari drivers did indeed race one another hard, with them almost colliding following Schumacher’s exit from the pit lane after his second pitstop, with Barrichello having to take to the infield to avoid spinning off. Following the race, the two drivers did not speak.

Spanish town council electee proposes nudist pool, marijuana field in park

Friday, June 1, 2007

A former mailman who proposed to paint the town hall pink, turn the local town square into a nudist pool, and to plant a marijuana field in the local park has been elected to the Reus, Spain town council.

Ariel Santamaria promised to show up to the town’s council meetings dressed up as Elvis Presley if he was elected and kept his word at the town’s first meeting on Thursday.

Before being elected, Santamaria who is a member of the Reus Independent Coordination, had also promised the town’s 100,000 residents that he would install a GPS system at the police department that would allow officers to track people who are smoking marijuana and provide them with a light if they need one.

An unnamed media consultant who works for Santamaria set up a website for his campaign and followed Santamaria wherever he went, dressed as a pirate.

Metal Patio Chairs For Outdoor Seating Environments

By Patricia Holland

Investing in durable, low-maintenance, and vandal-resistant metal patio chairs is a smart move on the part of any organization who seeks to combine attraction factor with functional, practical performance. Applications for these chairs range from residential landscaping design to outdoor seating areas around medical facilities.

A colorful metal picnic table and matching chairs can turn any deck or garden patio into an outdoor dining room.

A small picnic table, surrounded by four stackable metal chairs, is an affordable way to create a comfortable place to sit and eat outside with only a handful of basic furnishings. A broad spectrum of color choices exists that allows residential landscape designers and do-it-yourselfers to match outdoor seating to the colors of your flowers, hedges, and outdoor buildings.

Commercial office parks can similarly benefit by adding metal patio chairs to any hardscape surface that affords a scenic view of the surrounding landscape.

Courtyards and atriums cost small office a tremendous amount of money that they often cannot afford to invest in commercial landscaping. This is why so many small office parks tend to opt for the more Spartan look of minimalist contemporary landscape design. There is less vegetation, less decoration, and fewer landscape elements to purchase on the front end.

Metal patio chairs will aesthetically compliment any such landscape wherever they are placed.

Metal looks good on a base of either concrete or gravel. This makes it possible to place these chairs on any type of hardscape surface that offers a scenic view of the surroundings. There is no need to create a special outdoor room because the landscape itself has been personalized to the individual with a thoughtfully positioned seating area that makes the entire property take on the dimensions of an outdoor living environment.

Metal patio chairs also provide people with excellent seating around swimming pools.

People getting out of the water prefer to sit on metal because it dries faster than wood. Rust resistant metal also holds up to direct exposure to large amounts of water much better than cheap wooden seats can withstand.

While there are treated wooden benches and chairs on the market that can easily withstand the force of water as effectively as metal, they are often very expensive, and they often look a bit too ‘natural’ for contemporary environments.

Many luxury settings also work better with glass tables and metal chairs because they convey a sense of refined manufacture that can contribute very nicely to the sense of the chic if the right colors and styles are appropriately matched to building architecture and swimming pool design.

Metal patio chairs are the preferred form of seating in break areas around medical care facilities. Institutions that specialize in treating mental health disorders require seating that can withstand the occasional emotional outbursts that can erupt from troubled patients. Hospitals also should take this precaution because people who feel helpless as their loved ones suffer will often transfer the resulting anger through acts of vandalism.

Metal seating can withstand both the forces of nature and human emotions better than most materials can endure. Its attraction factor speaks for itself, and the fact that it needs minimal maintenance make ti the best place to put money when money has to be spent with an eye toward long-turn savings benefits.

Teaching Intelligent Design: Incumbent Dover PA school board fails reelection

Wednesday, November 9, 2005

The Dover, Pennsylvania school board became the first to mandate inclusion of Intelligent Design in a public school biology curriculum. For this year’s November 8 election, Republicans fielded a pro-Intelligent Design slate of candidates including some returning candidates who had previously voted to include a statement about Intelligent Design in the biology curriculum. A mixed slate of Democrat and Republican candidates came forward as an alternative group of school board candidates, the Dover CARES coalition. They proposed to remove Intelligent Design from the biology curriculum but allow discussion of Intelligent Design in courses dealing with philosophy and comparative religion.

All eight open school board seats were won by Dover CARES coalition candidates. Two candidates who had previously voted as school board members to include intelligent design in the public school science curriculum received the fewest votes in Tuesday’s election. One of the newly elected board members is Bryan Rehm, a parent of a Dover school student. Rehm, along with ten other parents, initiated a law suit against the school board for its decision to insert Intelligent Design into the science curriculum.

In October 2004, the Dover school board decided that Intelligent Design is a scientific theory that should be mentioned in biology classes that include discussion of biological evolution as part of the course content. The board mandated that a statement should be read in those classes stating “Intelligent Design is an explanation of the origin of life,” and “The school leaves the discussion of the Origins of Life to individual students and their families.”

The school board’s statement on Intelligent Design directs students to the book Of Pandas and People as a source of information “for students who might be interested in gaining an understanding of what Intelligent Design actually involves.” This book is published by the Foundation for Thought and Ethics, a non-profit organization founded for the purpose of “promoting and publishing textbooks presenting a Christian perspective.”

Parents of some Dover public school students filed a lawsuit against the school board, charging that including the school board’s statement on Intelligent Design was an attempt to introduce religion into the science curriculum. The book Of Pandas and People says, “Intelligent design means that various forms of life began abruptly through an intelligent agency.” The original complaint in the law suit against the school board claimed that “Intelligent design is a non-scientific argument or assertion.”

The US District Court Judge John Jones, who heard the non-jury case, hopes to make his ruling by the end of the year. The evidence phase of the trial ended on November 4, 2005.

A local Dover newspaper, the York Daily Record, editorialized that Dover voters should take trial testimony into account during the general election when they could cast votes for school board members along with other elective offices.

Biology teachers in the Dover schools have refused to read the school board’s statement on Intelligent Design to students because the Pennsylvania state code for education states that “The professional educator may not knowingly and intentionally misrepresent subject matter.” In a letter to their administrator, the teachers stated their view that “Intelligent design is not science.” School administrators have been reading the school board’s Intelligent Design statement to students in Dover public schools.

Cutting bonuses and management is Dell’s new strategy

Monday, February 5, 2007

The return of Michael Dell as the Chief Executive Officer of computer making giant Dell marked a series of changes. In his memo to the employees of the company he founded, Michael Dell said that there will be no bonuses and that the company will reduce its management in an effort to cut costs.

2006 was not a financial success for Dell. It lost its leading market position to Hewlett-Packard, and the SEC started investigating Dell for possible accounting improprieties. Several executives also left during recent months.

The daily newspaper Austin American-Statesman reported the Rollins memo and posted on its website a copy of the e-mail. The e-mail was confirmed by Dell’s spokesman for the Associated Press.

Michael Dell’s memo also outlined the fact that all bonuses would be replaced by so-called “limited discretionary awards”. The beneficiaries of such awards will be all but senior management. There will also be a shortening in the period of stock investing.

Horse Aids}

Horse Aids

by

Anthony Kristovich III What are horse aids ?Horse aids help as a mode of communication between the rider and the horse. It is like a direction to the horse where the rider applies physical pressures which create a shape and direct the horse to change gait, move left or right. As the rider and the horse progress in their training, they combine several aids with more subtle variations to move around with complex actions.

How are aids different than cues ?

Horse Aids are different than horse cues. A Horse’s response to voice commands, clicks or bumps to make a certain move is Cues. Cues are a different communication system than aids. But, the problem is that the riders who communicate to their horses by cues are working with a short vocabulary while horse aids have a vast vocabulary with minute variations to have different meanings. Hence, to get the horse to the next level, one needs a better mode of communication and a better vocabulary for a horse to understand.

Natural Vs Artificial Aids ?

Natural aids define as physical influences on horse’s body applied by the rider. They include rider’s legs, weight, hands, the seat or weight aids etc. Whereas artificial aids are the whips and spurs to which most people are familiar with. Artificial aids are actually used as in conjunction with the natural aids to reinforce the action.

Natural aids: Natural aids consist of legs, seat, hands, rein or weight aids. These aids are put together into ways of pressure that the horse feels and moves according to the rider. As the rider can vary the pressure of any aid, the expertise of the rider is defined by the ease with which the rider could communicate with the horse. The meaning of the aid can have hundreds of variations of shape to the horse.

Leg aids are used mainly as driving aid which asks the horse to move a hind leg forward. It can be applied with varying degrees of pressure and different sequence to move a different shape. When pressure is applied with a single leg it is called a unilateral leg aid, whereas with both legs it is called a bilateral leg aid. Weight aids are when a rider droops lower to apply more weight to make the horse feel heavier. Or, unburdening or lightening the horse seat bones to make the saddle feel lighter. These too can be unilateral or bi-lateral. They help the horse to rebalance more over one foot and take a shape towards left or right.Rein aids are applied by the hands and elastic wrists while the elbow and shoulder joints stay flexible.

Artificial Aids: Artificial aids include the whips, spurs and voice commands. At many times the voice is used more as a cue than as an aid but having many different meanings. In horse industry, many have a misconception about the whips and spurs. They are just a way or the language to reinforce leg aids that the horse already understands. They should be applied with a degree of pressure which does not startle the horse or raise his excitement. Timing is also critical while using artificial aids to communicate with the horse.

GAITSWhat are Horse gaits ?Horse gaits refer to the movement of the horse either by training or naturally. It can be a walk, trot, canter or a gallop. There are several other movements that require special training and a high level of communication between the horse and its rider.

Natural Gaits: Most horses have four types of natural gaits. Though, some breeds have more gaits which are sometimes natural or trained.

Walk: the work is a 4-step movement. A horse always has two or three hooves on the ground. The walk is slower than other type of gaits, but is more steady and comfortable. Naturally, a horse moves his right hind leg first followed by his right fore leg. The walk gait is then continued by moving left hind and later left fore leg moves. Trot: A steady 2-step movement, trot is a combined diagonal leg movement of the horse. In between these springs, there are moments when all the hooves of the horse are in mid-air. The horse moves ahead its right hind leg

Ireland votes to overturn 35-year-old constitutional ban on abortion

Sunday, May 27, 2018

In the official result of Friday’s Irish referendum over the legality of abortion, referendum officer Barry Ryan announced yesterday 66.4% of voters favoured overturning the eighth amendment of the constitution. Introduced in 1983, the eighth amendment made abortion constitutionally illegal. Irish Taoiseach — Prime Minister — Leo Varadkar said supporting legislation, to be framed following the result of this referendum, is to be “enacted before the end of this year”.

More than 2.1 million people voted on the referendum on Friday. With a 64.1% turnout, 1,429,981 voted in favour of eliminating the abortion ban while 723,632 voted to keep it. The results were announced at Dublin Castle. About 6000 voters spoiled their votes. Calling it “an historic day”, Prime Minister Varadkar said it was “a great act of democracy.” Ministers said they would form laws allowing medical termination of pregnancy in the first trimester, twelve weeks, of pregnancy, and under special cases until the 24th week. The legislation is to be formed after discussion with medical experts.

Since the amendment, Article 40.3.3 of the Irish constitution, in 1983, which gave an unborn child equal rights to life as the mother, hundreds of thousands of women traveled to different countries for the medical termination of pregnancy, while some used medical drugs illegal in Ireland to terminate the pregnancy.

“Savita Matters, Women Matter” was one of the slogans used by the supporters who wanted to repeal the amendment. In October 2012, a 31-year-old dentist of Indian origin, Savita Halappanavar, died from sepsis at a Galway hospital after she was denied abortion for a protracted miscarriage. She was told by a midwife that termination of pregnancy would not be possible since Ireland was a “Catholic country”. Halappanavar’s photo was used for posters by supporters who wanted the 35-year-old amendment repealed. In 2016, the current Roman Catholic Pope, Pope Francis, described abortion as a “very grave sin” and a “horrendous crime”.

Halappanavar’s father Andanappa Yalagi told Hindustan Times, “We’ve got justice for Savita. What happened to her will not happen to any other family. I have no words to express my gratitude to the people of Ireland at this historic moment.” 39 of 40 Irish constituencies voted in favour of repealing the law, while voters in only one constituency, Donegal, voted against — 51.87% opting to keep the anti-abortion laws. After the result was announced, the crowd were chanting Savita’s name in front of Dublin Castle.

Cora Sherlock, an anti-abortion activist, said, “what we voted on today is the ending of human life.” “I will accept the will of the Irish people, at the same time I will make it very clear what I feel of the campaign that has taken place. We will now regroup and find out what our next move is”, she added. Another activist, David Quinn, said, “The result today is basically a reversal of the 1983 result. On that occasion the defeated side did not simply slip away.”

“The people have said that we want a modern constitution for a modern country”, Prime Minister Varadkar said. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau later congratulated Varadkar on Twitter, saying: “What a moment for democracy and women’s rights.”
