Food with cancer-causing dye recalled in Britain

Saturday, April 30, 2005

The British Food Standards Agency (FSA) has announced a recall of foods containing banned dyes which increase the risk of cancer. The food products were sold at the Tesco, Waitrose, and Somerfield supermarkets.

A Bristol company called “Barts Spices” found the illegal Para Red substance in their Barts Ground Paprika, which was sold in 48g and 46g jars with a “Co-op” label. The batch codes on the affected products are 5032 and 5089 (expiration Dec 2007), and 5075 (expiration February 2007).

Tesco also found that their 130g package of BBQ rice cakes (expiration November and December 2005) contained both Para Red and Sudan I.

“It would be very prudent to assume that it could be a genotoxic carcinogen,” FSA scientific advisers told reporters.

“As a company committed to supplying only the very finest quality food ingredients, we took the immediate decision to withdraw our ground paprika spice from all outlets selling the product and advertised a product recall in the national press,” a Barts Spices spokesman said in a statement.

Sudan I is only authorized for industrial use to colorize petroleum products, such as shoe polish. Para Red and Sudan I are banned under the British Colours in Food Regulations of 1995.

Britain last went through a major food recall in February, when Worcester Sauce was found to contain chili powder dyed with Sudan 1.

Ready To Roll: Storing Bikes

By Chad Henners

If you live in a warm part of the country you might pedal year round. But if you live in a place that truly experiences four seasons then you’ll be moving your bike inside when the frost is on the pumpkin. Is there a right way to store a bike? Is there anything you need to do before you put it in the basement or the garage or the shed for the winter?

If you’re a serious cyclist, a high-end mountain, touring or racing bike can easily cost over $3,000. Even if your investment is less, it makes sense to take care of the two wheels and frame that you enjoy riding around the neighborhood. Before you go in for the winter, here are some tips for properly storing your bike.

First – Think about it like you’re putting your bike down for a nap. If you were going to take a nap, you probably wouldn’t go to sleep with mud and dirt and grime all over your clothes. Before you store your bike, clean it up. Take time to wipe down the frame, rims and spokes. This easy maintenance will not only keep your bike looking sharp, but the attention to detail will help you notice any other major or minor repairs that need to be performed.

Second – If you’re a cyclist who relies on your local bike shop for tune-ups, consider having it done before you put the bike away for the winter. There are a couple advantages to this. Your wheels will be ready to roll in the spring and you’ll avoid the busy season at the bike shop so your turnaround will be quick.

Third – If you’re doing the tune up yourself, lubricate the chain, gears and cables. It’s best if you can keep your bike in a climate-controlled environment. Storing your bike in cold temperatures can cause any moisture inside the frame to condense. Condensation will eventually cause rust. So if you must store your bike in an unheated building, consult your local bike pro for a rust-proof oil that you can apply to the frame.

Fourth – Hanging your bike on the wall or ceiling is a space saving idea. Make sure you don’t hang it from the wheels. Weight over a long period of time can distort the shape of your rims. Suspend the bike from the frame or handle bars and seat. You can purchase specialized cable and pulley systems that do the job nicely. If you’re not hanging it up, flip it over so the tires aren’t bearing weight.

Fifth – Whether you’re storing your bike inside or out, keep the tires inflated. Over the winter, they will deflate a bit on their own. If you’re storing it outside or in an unheated building, pull the wheels off and keep them inside where it’s warm. Cold weather over several months isn’t good for the rubber.

Sixth – Just like you’d pull up a blanket for your nap, throw a cover over your bike when you store it. Especially if it’s in direct sunlight. Prolonged sun exposure can dry the rubber on your tires causing them to split. The cover will also protect it from dust and the elements.

Follow these tips and when spring rolls around you’ll be ready to roll, too.

Man auctions his life on eBay, is disappointed at sale price

Monday, June 30, 2008

After auctioning off his entire life on eBay for A$399,300 (244 912.148) Ian Usher says he is “a little bit disappointed” at the final selling price.

The 44-year-old British immigrant living in Perth, Australia, put all of his worldly belongings up for sale on the popular auction website, including his three-bedroom house and all its contents, his car, motorcycle, jetski, skydiving gear, and his job at a rug store, for which he offered a two week trial period. He even offered introductions to his friends living in Perth.

Usher made the decision to sell his life after his five-year marriage suddenly ended. On his website, alife4sale.com, he explains that “despite my life being busy and fulfilled, I still miss my wife so much. Everything in my home is a reminder of the wonderful past we shared. So, after a year in this house I decided that it is time to sell it and move on.”

It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.

During the 7 day auction, which ended on Sunday, there were several bogus bids which brought the sale price as high as A$2.2 million, but the final price ended up at A$399,300, which was around A$100,000 less than Usher had hoped for. “I’m a little bit disappointed, but I’m still excited. It’s still enough to move forward and do what I said I was going to do, which is move on to the next part of my life,” Usher said. “It was as much about moving on as it was about selling it for as much as I could get.”

According to Reuters, the winning bidder, whose username is “mslmcc”, also lives in Australia, and has a 100 percent feedback rating. Usher says he hasn’t yet been able to figure out who the buyer is, because of the TV crews lined up in front of his home. “I’m trying to find some time to get on the computer and check it out … I haven’t looked (up) anything about them yet,” he said.

Usher now plans to go off in search of a new life. His initial plan, as he describes on his website, was to just walk out his front door with just his wallet and a passport and board a train, with no idea of where to go. He has since launched 100goals100weeks.com, which will document his attempt to complete 100 of his life goals in a span of 100 weeks. Some of these goals include getting a pilot’s license, climbing the Eiffel Tower, learning to play the didgeridoo, and shaking hands with billionaire Richard Branson.

“I was pretty aimless when I started this, and I had a vague notion of adventure, but I’ve come up with a much more solid plan, which is still very adventurous,” Usher says. He invites anyone who is interested to join him on his adventures.

Accidental email brings product placement agency under fire

Sunday, September 21, 2008

An email accidentally sent to Jeff Crouse of the Anti-Advertising Agency recently brought the controversial techniques of the advertising firm Kluger Agency under fire.

“I’m writing because we feel you may be a good company to participate in a brand integration campaign within the actual lyrics of one of the worlds most famous recording artists upcoming song/album,” the email read, offering to place Jeff Crouse‘s fake brand, Double Happiness Jeans, into the songs of popular artists. It was posted on his blog along with a reply that mocked Kluger and brought ridicule and criticism against Adam Kugler and his agency. According to Crouse, Kluger emailed him once again to claim it had been an automated email, and later requested that Crouse remove the post and comments criticizing himself and his agency, threatening a $150,000 lawsuit against Crouse for defamation.

Kluger Agency is known for advertising brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Mercedes-Benz, and Nike by inserting the brand names in the songs of popular artists like Mariah Carey, Black Eyed Peas, Fall Out Boy, Pink, Lady GaGa and Ludacris. Kluger, founded in 2006, represents over 170 corporations and focuses on well-known record labels.

Kluger and his PR team have come forward defending the advertising techniques, stating that they do not have songs made just for the products in question and do not infringe on artistic integrity. “Now, we don’t want an artist to write a song specifically to promote a brand, we just feel that if it’s a product that’s admired by the artist and fits his/her image, we now have the capability of leveling out the playing field and making things financially beneficial for all parties involved,” he was quoted saying to Wired.

However, the agency’s website shows video examples of its product placement, with brand images and names often being repeated, pointed at, praised, or being the basis of the song. The website also advertises that “a successful ‘brand-dropping’ campaign will imprint [the] brand name and product into your market’s subconscious”.

Staying Young With Anti Aging Supplements

By Harley John

Media is playing an important role in promoting young and beautiful faces on the television so frequently. People get influenced by the beauty and charm of young faces as never before and they also want to look like them. People also start associating beauty with looking young. Middle aged people also get very concerned about their aging too soon. They feel the need of doing something to prevent or delay the process of the aging, as no one wishes to look old.

There are some Anti aging supplements available in the market, which may not be able to reverse the process of aging, but have many advantages and will certainly make you look younger. We need to understand that our body require various supplements, but these do not have the same effect on everyone. A supplement may be advantageous to one person, but the same could have a negative effect on another person. This makes it essential to have a consultation with a medical physician, so that the right supplement is taken.

People tend to look for something that would make time come to a standstill and keep them look younger forever. However this is an unreasonable demand and is not feasible at all. To help people look young than their age, many Anti aging supplements are available. They help you stay young naturally rather than subjecting your health to dangerous chemicals. Now-a-days the facility of cosmetic surgeries is also available. However all cannot avail the facility of surgeries to remove wrinkles, as they are very expensive and may have severe side-effects too.

Anti aging supplements are thus cheaper and an affordable option available to most of us. The Anti aging products have become very popular, but you should know that there is a difference between products such as Anti aging creams and Anti aging supplements. Anti aging supplements take care of the entire body, but Anti aging creams focus only on making the face look younger. You can use them together too for better and quicker results.

As we grow older, many deficiencies naturally occur in the body, as it loses proteins, vitamins and minerals, which were present in the body naturally when younger. Anti aging supplements consist of such nutrients, which can make up for these deficiencies and rejuvenate your body. With growing age your skin starts to lose its natural glow and elasticity. As a result your skin looks wrinkled, dry and cold, and starts looking dull. These Anti aging supplements will help you in improving your skin’s condition, by giving the body the required boost and make you feel younger.

Many people believe that the supplements would make them younger but that is not true, as nothing can reverse aging. These supplements slow down the aging process of the body and help recover some of the damage done earlier. It implies that aging signs will now be seen at a slower rate and the symptoms of an aged body would be reduced. These supplements are appreciated by people, as they are able to keep their bodies in proper shape with their help.

The supplements alone cannot do wonders on the body. You must adopt a healthy lifestyle, do regular exercises, have healthy and balanced food and take care of your body. You should also consult a doctor for the choice of Anti aging supplements. It would be advisable to take supplements like multivitamins, as they are absolutely natural. Though synthetic vitamins are equally useful, but they do not provide the same benefits, because of their structure and capacity for absorption. It is difficult for synthetic vitamins to get absorbed in the body compared to natural supplements. These synthetic supplements may be harmful to patients too and should be consumed only under a doctor’s guidance. Ingredients like vitamin D, zinc, magnesium and calcium are used in the Anti aging supplements and are considered the best in the market.

NZ Sky TV customers to get refund for satellite failure

Saturday, April 1, 2006

On Thursday night, a failure of the Optus B1 satellite affected the Sky Pay TV network and also caused a blackout of other satellite-based systems. Sky TV subscribers will get a refund for the inconvenience.

The satellite was down from Thursday evening to Friday morning. It also covers international emergency service and air traffic coordination. However, thanks to backup services, no serious effects were caused.

Satellite experts and astronomers questioned Sky’s explanation that the solar eclipse had hampered attempts to get the service back up and running – the eclipse happened nearly 24 hours before the outage, and thus the satellite should have been in a different area of the sky. A spokesman of Sky TV said the problem occurred because the eclipse happened at the moment the sun was required to charge the satellite’s batteries for a routine realignment.

The pay TV company is considering paying compensation to advertising customers as well.

Wikinews interviews Ethan Zuckerman

Wednesday, May 3, 2006

On Friday, April 28, Wikinews interviewed Ethan Zuckerman, the founder of Geekcorps, a non-profit organization that sending people with technical skills to developing countries for development projects. Ethan has also founded Global Voices Online and helped found Tripod.com, the free web-hosting company now owned by Lycos. He serves a fellow at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Tripod.

The interview was held publicly in a dedicated IRC channel.

 • What insipred you to get behind Geekcorps, and has there been a big Geekcorps mission, yet?

I got interested in Geekcorps because I’d lived in Ghana as a student in 1993 and 1994While over there, I was amazed at just how little internet connectivity was availableI did a bit of volunteer work helping wire an environmental organization, but basically the only people who had regular net access were US embassy employees. So I was fascinated to learn that my friends in Ghana were getting online in the late 1990s, and I wondered whether anyone would start building net-based businesses, as people were doing in the USMy wife and I went back to Ghana to visit friends and found that there was a huge deal of enthusiasm about the web and the potential it represented, but almost no expertisepeople were really desperate to learn, but very few people were able to teach at the same time, I was ready to step down from Tripod, and I knew a lot of burned out geeksI started wondering whether some of my friends would be interested in sharing their skills in the developing world and whether that would be a useful thing to dolots of international development folks seemed to think it was a good cause, so I started working on it fulltime. We ended up sending about 100 people overseas over the four years I was involved with the projectwe usually sent about 6-8 to a country at a time, working with a variety of businesses, NGOs and government agencies biggest projects were in Ghana, Mali, Mongolia, Senegal.

 • With Geekcorps you pushed the idea that newly tech-savvy citizens of developing countries could start online businesses to do digital work for the developed world. But from an American perspective, that’s outsourcing, the bane of US workers. How do you justify working towards a goal that might cost Americans their jobs?

Basically, I’m concerned about the ability of people all over the world to make a good living, send their children to school, build nice houses, have enough food and clean water, etc there’s clearly something of a tradeoff offered by all sorts of globalization – as millions of Chinese are lifted out of rural povery, industrial manufacturing jobs in the US disappear but the US has a pretty good history of innovating and creating new jobs in fields that require a lot of intellectual endeavor the US continues to found interesting software companies, pioneer new net services and generally do a lot of the interesting development on the cutting edge of tech I think a lot of routine coding jobs are up for outsourcing, but I don’t think that people who design software – or who manage the outsourcing and software development process – are going away any time soon it’s very hard to outsource creative activities – it’s somewhat easier to outsource repetitive processes.I think we need to worry less about individual job loss and more about the ability to continue creating new projects. at the same time, I’m very excited to see companies in the developing world moving up the value chain as well, starting to innovate and create new projects as well…

 • Lately you’ve been involved with projects including Global Voices and Worldchanging. Where and how do the two dovetail, and where and how do they differ? What are the strengths of each?

They’re very different projects and communities, WC is a magazine -it’s a chance for a small group of smart people to write original content on green issues it’s a lot less global than GV – perhaps overly focused on the US and Europe – and has a tight subject focus GV is an edited aggregator People are not so much writing original, opinionated content on GV as they are linking to other content indeed, we ask people to try very hard not to be especially opinionated on GV. Not NPOV, but a similar perspective – you point, you don’t advocate<ethanz> also GVO is huge – 10 regional editors, about 60 regular contributors, a network of about a thousand blogs we regularly link to the community has a very different feeling – much more international, more 24/7. both are fascinating projects, successes in their own ways, but quite different on the tech issues, a little – in both cases, we’re taking very simple weblog tools and asking them to support very large communities. And a little bit on the issue of how they interface with mainstream media in both cases, we’re interested in amplifying memes and getting them picked up by popular press as well as on the web.

 • Isn’t that a contradiction? you’re asking people to be “less” opinionated, but not asking them to be unopinionated?

Blogs are essentially about opinion, asking for NPOV in the blog space misses the point – we want to know what opinions people in Syria have but we want our middle east editor to try to fairly represent the different opinions taking place in that space that said, he’s got an opinion as well so asking for NPOV isn’t the right thing to do – asking him to point to a diversity of opinions is, in our case
