World Wrestling Entertainment heir Shane McMahon resigns from the company

Friday, October 16, 2009

Predicted heir to World Wrestling Entertainment Shane McMahon has announced he will leave the company on January 1, 2010. McMahon is the son of current owner Vincent K. McMahon and the current Executive Vice President of Global Media for the company. With the departure of Shane, it will be the first time that a male heir will not take over the company when Vince retires.

Shane announced his resignation on WWE.com earlier today saying, “It is with great sadness that I announce my resignation from the WWE, effective January 1, 2010.” He mentioned how he “never even considered a future outside the walls of the WWE.” He continued to thank his father and superstars of today and the past. According to Shane, he resigned because it was his “to pursue outside ventures.”

World Wrestling Entertainment released an official statement responding to Shane’s announcement. Current owner and Shane’s father Vince McMahon said, “Even though I am personally saddened by Shane’s decision to leave the company, I am proud of the enormous contributions he has made. He will unquestionably bring passion, commitment and extensive business experience to any endeavour he pursues.”

Shane was the fourth generation to World Wrestling Entertainment. He is the son of Vincent K. McMahon, the grandson of Vincent J. McMahon and the great-grandson of Jess McMahon. He has two sons who are considered the fifth generation.

Belgian bus company knows solution for car parking problems

Monday, May 21, 2007

Do you have a hard time finding a parking space? Take the bus or tram if you go to the city. That’s the message Belgian bus company De Lijn (The Line) is sending to promote public transport as a solution for car parking problems. As a part of their media campaign, they have jokingly suggested that people use the top of the busses as parking space.

Another idea they are using in their media campaign: maybe you could park your car on the bottom of a canal? The bus company is using an invented diving company called Cardive, which has divers that offer to dump your car in the canal. The divers walk around in cities and hand out free bus tickets and maps of the bus network.

To reach car drivers who are not using public transport, the media campaign has several radio commercials that present other solutions to the car parking problem. You could use “asphalt-spray” to camouflage your car, making it invisible for policemen (although you then need to remember where you’ve parked). Or you could use the “flat tire kit”, which comes with a fake flat tire and an inflatable dummy, so it looks like you’re replacing your flat tire. The final idea the bus company has is to use a View-Master to fool parking guards into believing that your car has been stationed correctly.

A survey among 4000 customers of De Lijn shows that two out of three car owners who use public transport, do so to avoid parking space troubles, and in cities this percentage rises to 90%. The survey further shows that 39% use the bus to go shopping.

During the month of May, the auto-bus and the divers tour several cities in Flanders (Leuven, Hasselt, Ghent, Bruges and Antwerp).

Go Debt Free With Debt Management And Consolidation

By Sean A. Kelly

When you are facing a situation where you have to choose the right kind of debt management help and you do not know head or tail about the basics of debt help, you know you are way in over your head. You have heard of the different terminologies and benefits but exactly what does each type of debt help entail? You know you are not an expert when it comes to debts and finances but you know you are smart enough to be able to understand the concept.

So what exactly is a debt management program? In essence, it is a program where every single one of your unsecured debts like credit card debts and unpaid bills are combined into one entity. This practice is called debt consolidation. Negotiations are made with your creditors by expert advisors for them to allow you to pay your debts in installments. An independent third party is appointed to handle all negotiations and payment arrangements on your behalf. Usually your advisor will hold discussions with every single one of your creditors and negotiate the terms and conditions for allowing you to pay your debts monthly and possibly to reduce the interest rate. Sometimes your advisor will go the extra mile and negotiate to get a reduction to the principal amount of your debt. As most creditors would rather lose some money than all of it, they usually will agree to a debt reduction provided you pay your debts on time and sometimes in one lump sum.

Once an agreement is achieved, your advisor will then combine the total amount of your debts and distribute them evenly throughout the pay back period as agreed between you and your creditors. When that is done, you may apply for a consolidation loan to enable you to pay your now only one debt. Consolidation loans are typically offered with very low interest rate. Every month, instead of paying money to several different creditors, you will be making one payment to the debt management consolidation provider or agency and your advisor will then disperse your money to each of your creditors according to the agreed monthly sum until the loan term is over and payment is complete. Then you will be debt free and all you will need to do is to stay debt free.

This particular method has its pros and cons. The most obvious advantage is that payment is made only to one single entity so you will not have to deal with various lenders. The loan is also obtainable at very low interest rates so you will probably be able to save some money and keep it handy for rainy days. You should also know that debt consolidation loan does not eliminate your debts but merely shifts your focus from having to deal with various creditors to the convenience of dealing with just one. Only when you finish making all the payments as per your loan term agreement will you really be debt free. Debt consolidation is designed simply to relieve you of the burden of making payments that are robbing you of being able to live your life well.

One of the disadvantages of this particular method of debt management and debt consolidation is that you might actually end up paying more than what you actually owe. This is due to the extension of your loan term when you signed up for the consolidation loan. Some debt management agencies offer free services but if they charge you for it, chances are they will have already included the due fees into your monthly payment amount. Another disadvantage is that you will be in debt longer than if you had stuck to the original pay back period of your initial loans.

When it comes to debt management and debt consolidation, there are basically four types of consolidation loans to help settle the issue. They are personal unsecured consolidation loan, credit card debt consolidation, cash-out home refinance and home equity loan or home equity line of credit. Each one is designed to suit different types of financial issues. It is possibly good to listen to your advisor well and take the advice given into serious consideration. You don’t want to be making the wrong decision when it comes to your debts.

UK company “seriously considering” GPS tracking devices in school uniforms

Saturday, August 25, 2007

The leading supplier of school uniforms in the United Kingdom, Lancashire-based manufacturer Trutex, has announced it is “seriously considering” including GPS tracking devices in future ranges of its uniform products after conducting an online survey of both parents and children.

“As a direct result of the survey, we are now seriously considering incorporating a [tracking] device into future ranges” said Trutex marketing director Clare Rix.

The survey questioned 809 parents and 444 children aged nine to 16. It showed that 44% of parents were worried about the safety of pre-teen children, and 59% wanted tracking devices installed in school apparel. 39% of children aged nine to 12 were prepared to wear clothing with tracking devices in them, while teenagers were notably less enthusiastic and more wary of what Trutex has admitted they see as a “big brother” concept.

However, Trutex has claimed the tracking devices would bring about worthwhile benefits, including being a valuable resource for parents who wanted to keep a close eye on where their children were at all times.

“As well as being a safety net for parents, there could be real benefits for schools who could keep a closer track on the whereabouts of their pupils, potentially reducing truancy levels” says Rix.

Each year, Trutex supplies 1 million blouses, 1.1 million shirts, 250,000 pairs of trousers, 20,000 blazers, 60,000 skirts and 110,000 pieces of knitwear to the UK.

It is not the first company to manufacture school uniforms with a central focus on child safety; last week Essex firm BladeRunner revealed it was selling stab-proof school blazers to parents concerned about violence against their children. The blazers were outfitted with Kevlar, a synthetic fibre used in body armour. It has already received orders internationally, including Australia.

If the Trutex tracking devices go ahead, it is unclear where in the uniform they will be located.

London cop fired for rape despite ‘insufficient evidence’ to prosecute

Friday, November 19, 2010

An officer with London’s Metropolitan Police (‘the Met’) has been fired for raping a woman, despite the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) declining to prosecute after saying there was insufficient evidence to prove the offence. The CPS would have to back the case up beyond reasonable doubt before a court, but the Met’s internal hearing considered only the balance of probabilities.

The policeman, whose name was not released as he has not been charged, met the woman — who is in her early twenties — after she became unwell following a night drinking with friends at a hotel party in Russell Square. The officer took her to a nearby pub where he had been drinking; later, he said he got her a glass of water, after which she vomited. CCTV footage showed the pair embrace. They then went to St Pancras railway station, where the officer was to sleep in a police locker room before going on duty that morning.

She would later claim to have little recollection of events, but that she awoke to find herself being raped. She told police in March last year, and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) launched an investigation. The accused man stated at interview the sex was consensual. The IPCC’s file was passed to the CPS.

Met Commander Mark Simmons said “[t]his officer acted in an intolerable way and it is only right that once such dreadful behaviour was found proven the man was dismissed from the Met.” IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne said “[t]he actions of this officer will rightly appal the public as they have appalled me. His behaviour was in my view predatory and he exploited the vulnerability of a young woman. He… took her to police premises and had sex with her without her consent. … His conduct would be contemptible from anyone — from a police officer it is nothing short of despicable.” A Women Against Rape statement called the woman “…very courageous. It is very difficult to report a police officer to the force that the rapist belongs to and we know of a lot of women who are too scared to do that.” The group called the CPS’s actions “outrageous”.

Wikinews interviews candidate for Cleveland mayor Arthur Kostendt

Monday, June 14, 2021

Arthur Oliver Kostendt, a candidate running in the mayoral election of the US city of Cleveland, Ohio set to take place November 2, discussed his campaign and policies with Wikinews this spring.

According to Cleveland Scene, 29-year-old Kostendt is a member of the Cuyahoga County, Ohio Republican Party but has referred to his campaign as “casual”. According to his web site’s personal biography, he was a cadet for the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC), scout platoon leader for the 2nd Squadron of the 107th Cavalry Regiment of the Ohio Army National Guard and logistics officer for the 1st Battalion of the 145th Armored Regiment. He served in Kuwait, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia and assisted coalition force detachments in Southeast Asia.

Kostendt is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame and summa cum laude graduate of Cleveland State University. He writes he uses an apostrophe to abbreviate his middle name as “Arthur O’Kostendt” instead of the customary period after the O to emphasise his Irish heritage.

A poll published May 5 by Baldwin Wallace University, which does not feature Mr Kostendt, has Dennis Kucinich and Basheer Jones leading in the mayoral race by 17.8 and 13.3 points, respectively, with a margin of error of up to five per cent either way. 48% of those surveyed were undecided. Incumbent mayor Frank G. Jackson, who won the 2017 Cleveland mayoral election with 59% of the vote, is eligible for a fifth term but announced on May 6 he would retire.

Major explosions at UK oil depot

Sunday, December 11, 2005

A series of large explosions have occurred close to Hemel Hempstead Hertfordshire, UK. The source of the explosions has been confirmed as the Hertfordshire Oil Storage Terminal (HOSL), Hemel Hempstead, known locally as the Buncefield complex. Up to 150 fire fighters are reported to be at the scene with 10 fire appliances and 1 specialist foamer.

The first ‘blast’ was heard near Hemel Hempstead on Sunday 11 Dec at 6 am. Further smaller explosions followed at 6:24am , 6:26am, 6:30am. BBC News 24 reported an additional, fourth large explosion. Hertfordshire Police Constabulary are currently treating the explosion as an accident.

Reports say the explosion, which registered 2.4 on the Richter scale, was heard as far away as Oxford, and Whitehall, Central London which is 60km (38 miles) away. Eyewitness statements report that the explosion was heard from at least 160km (100 miles) away and as far away as France and The Netherlands. Pilots reported noticing the blast from the North Sea and the West Country area of the UK. The M1 motorway which runs close by has been closed in both directions near the blast which is causing travel chaos as other roads become congested.

Malcom Stewart, a BBC News24 eyewitness who is a tanker driver for the site has reported that the site supplies several oil companies and is a joint operation between Total UK and Texaco, it is also used by BP, Shell and the British Pipeline association. The complex is not a refinery but a storage facility for refined petroleum awaiting distribution to airports and filling stations. The eyewitness reports that the depot has approximately 20 tanks which can hold about 3 million gallons (11 million litres or 70,000 barrels) each. Another News24 eyewitness has just reported that he has seen at least 5 of these tanks on fire.

The depot operates on a 24 hour basis and is split into 2 parts – aviation fuel and domestic fuel. A number of eyewitnesses have reported on UK news that the aviation fuel side appears to be the part of the site that has been affected.

Local authorities were not immediately available for comment but there have been reports of casualties.

Some reports on live television state that, “Several other neighbours said they did see a plane go into the depot.” BBC News 24 were also discussing the idea a possible plane crash as the cause of the explosions. Hertfordshire police have now gone on the record to say that there is no plane involved (BBC News24).

The police have issued a contact number 0800 096 0095 and asked that people do not call the emergency services in Hertfordshire directly unless it is an emergency.

In addition to being an oil storage depot, it is a major hub on the UK oil pipeline network with pipelines to Killingholme Lindsey Oil Refinery (LOR), Humberside (10 inch), Merseyside (10 and 12 inch), Coryton on the Thames Estuary (14 inch) and Heathrow (6 and 8 inch) and Gatwick airports radiating from it.

The disaster is believed to be the worst explosion at a petrochemical plant in the UK since the Flixborough disaster of 1974.Hertfordshire’s Chief Fire Officer Roy Wilsher said: “This is possibly the largest incident of its kind in peacetime Europe.”

A firefighting press officer said that they are stock piling foam from neighboring regions for a prolonged attach which they hope will stop the spread of the fire, however, the inferno itself will have to burn out which could take between 24 hours and a few days.

Despite the authorities saying that there is no need to panic buy petrol, filling stations have had above average queues since this morning and some small garages have ran out.

Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott has visited the scene.

Doctor robbed, car-jacked and locked in boot while car set alight

Monday, March 19, 2007

A 34 year old obstetrician from Forestville on Sydney’s Northern Beaches has escaped after he was robbed, car-jacked and locked in the boot (trunk) of his BMW, which was set alight. Police say the doctor was locked in the boot while his car was set alight, but was allowed to escape before flames engulfed the vehicle.

The Doctor was believed to have been heading to The Mater Hospital in North Sydney when he was waiting at the intersection of West and Falcon Streets in Chatswood around 3:15AM AEDT when a small red sedan with two men claiming to be police officers signalled him to stop. After crossing the intersection, the doctor stopped his car at the side of the road.

The doctor was then approached by the two men and when he asked to see identification, one man grabbed the keys from his car’s ignition before they both pulled the doctor out of his vehicle, hit him in the stomach with a hammer and stole his mobile phone and wallet. The robbers also demanded his key and credit cards along with their access codes before locking him in the boot.

Police allege that the men drove to several locations to withdraw cash and buy things before driving to Carisbook Street in Linley Point at around 4 a.m. local time where they set the car alight with the doctor still in the boot.

Crime Manager of the Harbourside Local Area Command, Detective Inspector Houlahan said that the doctor then “heard a click in the boot area and he heard someone call out: ‘Get out of the car'”

“When he pushed the boot up he found his car engulfed in flames.”

Det. Insp. Houlahan said the doctor told police he did not unlock the boot himself, and it appeared the man’s captors unlocked it before fleeing.

Det Insp Houlahan said that the doctor appeared to be “very distraught” and tired after the ordeal, and wanted to get home and see his wife and two young daughters.

He could only provide police with a vague description of his captors, but said the men were both Caucasian males aged in their 20s, and that one of them was about six feet tall (183cm) with short blond hair and medium build said Det. Insp. Houlahan.

Wireless Mesh Networking

Every node not only captures and disseminates its own data, it also serves as a relay for the other nodes. Mesh networking is a type of networking that needs collaboration for propagation.A mesh network is designed using either, a flooding technique or a routing technique. The latter is when the message propagates along a path by hopping from one node to another until the destination is reached. And to make sure that all of the paths are available, a routing network using self-healing algorithms should allow continuous connections and reconfiguration around broken or blocked paths. This self-healing capability enables a routing based network to operate when one node breaks down or gets disrupted. As a result, the network is usually reliable since there is often more than one path between a source and a destination in the network. The self-healing capability concept can also be used to wired networks and software interaction, although it is usually for wireless scenarios. Wireless mesh networks were originally developed for military applications and usually of mesh architectures. However, on the next years after that, the size, cost and power requirements of radios declined causing more radios top be included within each device acting as a mesh node. The additional radios then within each node enable it to support multiple functions, like access, backhaul service, and scanning which requires a high speed handover in mobile applications. Additionally, the reduction in radio, size, cost and power enabled the mesh nodes to be more modular. One node or device can now contain multiple radio cards or modules, allowing the nodes to be customized to handle a unique set of functions and frequency bands. Work in this field has been relieved by the use of game theory methods to analyze strategies for the allocation of resources and routing of packets. Game theory is a mathematical method for analyzing calculated circumstances, such as in games, where a persons success is based upon the choices of others.Mesh networks can also be seen as a kind of ad hoc network, for this purpose, a self-configuring infrastructure-less network of mobile devices connected by wireless links. This and mesh networks are therefore closely related, although MANET also has to deal with the problems brought by the mobility of the nodes.A mesh network having nodes connected to each other is a fully-connected network. In early 2007, the US-based firm Meraki launched a mini wireless mesh router, an example of a wireless mesh network on a claimed speed of up to 50 megabits per second. The 802.11 radio within the Meraki Mini has been optimized for long-distance communication, providing coverage of over 250 m, an example of a single-radio mesh network being used within a community as opposed to multi-radio long range mesh networks like BelAir or MeshDynamics that provide multifunctional infrastructure.
