Anna Ayala, the Las Vegas woman who claims to have found the notorious “chili finger” at a Wendy’s outlet in San Jose, California, has filed lawsuits against other businesses, according to researchers at the Associated Press. Her previous court battles included the national El Pollo Loco chicken-chain, a previous employer, and even General Motors.

Ayala successfully won her suit for medical expenses against El Pollo Loco, after her daughter Genesis contracted salmonella poisoning from eating at the restaurant. However, Ayala lost another suit in 2000 claiming that a wheel fell off her car.

Ayala’s original account of the incident spoke “emotionally and with disgust” to the San Jose Mercury News when she described it to the paper.

“Lies, lies, lies, that’s all I am hearing. They should look at Wendy’s. What are they hiding? Why are we being victimized again and again?” Ayala recently told The Associated Press. Ayala is now in her Las Vegas home, avoiding reporters.

“It doesn’t prove anything,” family spokesman Ken Bono told the San Francisco Chronicle. “My mom has 10 lawsuits. A lot of people have lawsuits. Why would she sue for money? She has plenty of money,” he said.

Nick Muyo, a spokesman for the San Jose Police department, said not to expect new information in the case for at least a week.

“We just want to step back and take a deep breath,” Muyo told Knight Ridder Newspapers. “From a law enforcement point of view, once you establish it is a human finger, you have to wonder is this a case of industrial accident or is this a case of unreported homicide,” he said.

Las Vegas police searched Anna Ayala’s home on Wednesday, retrieving a cooler and other effects from her home, such as a makeup case.

Despite the incident, which has dramatically reduced sales at Northern California Wendy’s outlets, die-hard Wendy’s fans are still turning up for lunch, even at the outlet where the finger was found, at 1405 Monterey Highway, just south of downtown San Jose.

“We’ve eaten here for years,” a police officer told the San Francisco Chronicle under the condition that he remain anonymous. “They’re very nice people. When we work Spartan Stadium, we always eat here,” he said.

San Jose City Council candidate Andrew Diaz still eats the chili. And he witnessed the finger discovery.

“I walked away real slow,” Diaz told the San Francisco Chronicle. “I didn’t want any commotion,” he said.

Umbrella Companies: Quick Tips}

Submitted by: Ed Lebbon

People nowadays simply leave the comforts of their office jobs for the freedom and flexibility of freelancing or becoming self-employed. It may be easy but have you ever though t of the long term liabilities involved such as tax affairs and accounting issues? Sure working on your own terms maximizes the time and increases the effort you have for the maximum amount of money you earn, however, there are always legal issues that one must deal with.

The only choice contractors, freelancers and the self-employed have would be to go through an umbrella company. Basically umbrella companies handle all the tedious paperwork involved in tax affairs and accounting issues. They make sure you become tax-efficient and that you comply with legislation’s of the HMRC and you are also IE35 compliant so you wont have to worry about the tax man knocking on your door.

There are a few things freelancers should have in mind when selecting a company because this is not like picking off the best looking candy at the store. First, aside from making sure they are compliant with tax legislation’s and laws, do make sure that there are no hidden fees such as entry or exit fees. Check out if they have penalties or minimum term commitments. Companies such as these are not a good option. Contractors should have the freedom to terminate their own contract without paying any ridiculous fees.

Watch out for companies with flashy words such as special expense dispensation. Dont believe companies that say they would process your claimed expenses without receipts. This would be a big no-no. The HMRC investigates all expense claims and once found out that there are no receipts to your claims then youd be in big trouble and not the company. Lessen the trouble by sticking to companies that ask for receipts. We wouldnt want the tax man barging in your front door.

The best companies offer contractors a full employment status. Why so? Being deemed as fully employed under the contract of an umbrella company gives you full benefits like those working under a regular contract at an actual office job. Meaning what? You get all the sick and holiday pays, leaves such as paternity and maternity leaves plus more. Others include minimum wage and pension provisions.

Companies should have an easy to reach portal or website where you can easily ask for help from their customer service representatives. Another thing to take note of when choosing a company is the business insurance they would likely offer. This covers your injuries while on the contract.

It is not a requirement for companies but some offer perks. These perks include gift certificates or gift vouchers. Some simply use it as a marketing strategy to get you to join them. Some offer childcare vouchers. These would be of great help for contractors, freelancers or self-employed individuals with kids. Childcare vouchers aid you to get NIC and full tax that greatly minimize costs on childcare.

Remember that in choosing a company that suits you, go with those your friends would recommend. Do a search online and check out those with great comments or referral rates. Getting the right company that best suits the structure of your work is always best.

There are a lot of companies but to help you save time then you should look no further than Access-a. Access-a is comprised of a team of experts equipped with the knowledge and expertise on tax affairs and issues. We make sure our solutions make each contractor 100% tax-efficient plus we make our solutions future-proof meaning it would easily be changed in cases were legislative changes occur.

Latest trial of the One Laptop Per Child running in India; Uruguay orders 100,000 machines

Thursday, November 8, 2007

India is the latest of the countries where the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) experiment has started. Children from the village of Khairat were given the opportunity to learn how to use the XO laptop. During the last year XO was distributed to children from Arahuay in Peru, Ban Samkha in Thailand, Cardal in Uruguay and Galadima in Nigeria. The OLPC team are, in their reports on the startup of the trials, delighted with how the laptop has improved access to information and ability to carry out educational activities. Thailand’s The Nation has praised the project, describing the children as “enthusiastic” and keen to attend school with their laptops.

Recent good news for the project sees Uruguay having ordered 100,000 of the machines which are to be given to children aged six to twelve. Should all go according to plan a further 300,000 machines will be purchased by 2009 to give one to every child in the country. As the first to order, Uruguay chose the OLPC XO laptop over its rival from Intel, the Classmate PC. In parallel with the delivery of the laptops network connectivity will be provided to schools involved in the project.

The remainder of this article is based on Carla G. Munroy’s Khairat Chronicle, which is available from the OLPC Wiki. Additional sources are listed at the end.

Wikinews interviews Democratic candidate for the Texas 6th congressional district special election Daryl Eddings, Sr’s campaign manager

Tuesday, April 20, 2021

Wikinews extended invitations by e-mail on March 23 to multiple candidates running in the Texas’ 6th congressional district special election of May 1 to fill a vacancy left upon the death of Republican congressman Ron Wright. Of them, the office of Democrat Daryl Eddings, Sr. agreed to answer some questions by phone March 30 about their campaigns and policies. The following is the interview with Ms Chatham on behalf of Mr Eddings, Sr.

Eddings is a federal law enforcement officer and senior non-commissioned officer in the US military. His experience as operations officer of an aviation unit in the California National Guard includes working in Los Angeles to control riots sparked by the O. J. Simpson murder case and the police handling of Rodney King, working with drug interdiction teams in Panama and Central America and fighting in the Middle East. He is the founder of Operation Battle Buddy, which has under his leadership kept in touch with over 20 thousand veterans and their families. He was born in California, but moved to Midlothian, Texas. He endeavours to bring “good government, not no government”. Campaign manager Faith Chatham spoke to Wikinews on matters ranging from healthcare to housing.

An Inside Elections poll published on March 18 shows Republican candidate Susan Wright, the widow of Ron Wright, is ahead by 21% followed by Democrat Jana Sanchez with 17% and Republican Jake Ellzey with 8% with a 4.6% margin of error among 450 likely voters. The district is considered “lean Republican” by Inside Elections and voted 51% in favour of Donald Trump in last year’s US presidential election. This is down from 54% for Trump in 2016’s presidential election, the same poll stated.

How Important Is Health Care

Healthcare is the general term used for the entire area of prevention, treatment and cure of illness and disease using the services of medical experts and resources. The World Health Organizations definition is a little different and refers more to the prevention of illness and services to encourage this, in addition to intervention that should be available to a single person as well as a whole population. The organized provision of such facilities may constitute a healthcare system. The term health care has not always been used though and prior to this is it was often just referred to medicine or the health sector but this was used more by English speaking nations. In most developed nations and many developing nations healthcare is provided to everyone regardless of their ability to pay. This first begun in the UK a few years after the end of World War 2 in 1948, and became the first healthcare service set up and run by a administration.Instead a system of compulsory government funded health insurance with nominal fees can be provided, as with Italy, which, according to The World Health Organization, has the second-best health system in the world. Canada and Australia have both begun similar systems and have been running since almost twenty and the 1970’s respectively both going by the name of Medicare. The main nations that do not support this general healthcare service are The United States and South Africa, although they are making reforms to their health service. health care professionals are dedicated to preventing illness and disease mainly, but also to treat and protect the long term health of their patients.Worldwide, over recent decades, there has been a huge growth in the sum of money spent on health care and it is now one of the fastest growing sectors in every developed country with an average cost of ten percent of the gross domestic product. America has seen some of the biggest rises and the figures in 2006 are anticipated to be the same as 2003 with over 15 percent of GDP – it is currently the biggest in the world but the increase by 2016 is expected to be almost twenty percent.currently in the America over 180 million citizens are looking for health care and it will be no surprise to learn that it is top of all concerns for those in and seeking work. A issue which came to a head when General Motors was seriously considering bankruptcy over the strain its health car plan was putting on the company. It was only after negotiations with the unions to reduce certain health benefits and the subsequent sell off of its poorly performing finance division that stopped the unthinkable from occurring.Workers in The United States place this as their number one priority when looking for a prospective employer and often will move to a lower paid position just to improve their medical care. Perhaps it is time healthcare was looked at in a different way and perhaps called health preservation with an accent on fitness and health to ease the need for a top heavy healthcare system which is becoming a global problem.

Ferry MV Suilven sinks in Suva, Fiji

Tuesday, November 24, 2015

MV Suilven, a ferry in service in Fiji, capsized and sank in Suva Harbour today.

Around thirty people, all crewmembers, were on board. Local media report all were rescued. The 41-year-old vessel previously saw service in Scotland and New Zealand.

The ship capsized early this afternoon and sank within an hour. It had been converted from passenger to cargo use following its most recent sale, to Venu Shipping in 2012 or 2011. Local reports indicated police, the Navy, local tug boats, and volunteer rescuers all attended the accident.

The converted ferry reportedly began to list on entering the harbour. It was working a route carrying cargo between Suva and the Northern Division.

Built in Norway, in service from 1974, the ship served with Scottish ferry firm Caledonian MacBrayne until 1995, connecting the mainland town of Ullapool to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. It was ultimately replaced by a larger, faster vessel and was sold to Strait Shipping who used it until 2004 to ply New Zealand’s seas, connecting Wellington to Picton and to Nelson.

The name MV Suilven is in reference to the Suilven mountain in Scotland’s Sutherland region.

Oil for food scandal: UN releases third report

Tuesday, August 9, 2005

The UN-appointed panel investigating the oil for food scandal has released its third report.

The report says that Benon Sevan took nearly US$150,000 in cash bribes. Chef de Cabinet for Kofi Annan, Mark Malloch Brown, said that the UN would lift Sevan’s immunity should an approach come from a law enforcement authority and that the UN had been in ‘active collaboration’ with the Southern District of New York.

At the press conference responding to the report, Malloch Brown also said that there was will “a real need for serious, deep-rooted management reform of our organization, and that does not seem to be yet fully accepted by all member states.”

Benon Sevan, who worked for the UN for nearly 40 years before resigning on Sunday, has denied the accusation. In his resignation letter to Kofi Annan, he wrote: “The charges are false and you, who have known me all these years, should know they are false… I fully understand the pressure you are under…, but sacrificing me for political expediency will never appease our critics or help you or the organisation.”

A former UN procurement officer Alexander Yakovlev has pleaded guilty to accepting hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes from UN contractors.
